PhycoFriday – Unlocking Hidden Bioactivity: Anti-inflammatory effects of microalgal fractions

Bad luck if you missed an excellent presentation by Jake Wiseman of MiAlgae on From Waste to Value: Scaling circular biotechnology at last month’s PhycoFriday on 31 July:  the Group very wisely does not record these events, in order to encourage more open discussion. It was a great session, full of advice and cutting-edge examples that can also apply directly to scale-up of many other types of environmental and industrial biotech.

MiAlgae, an Earthshot Prize finalist in 2024, is well known to EBNet members for its technology based on treatment of distillery wastes to produce omega-3 oils  as value-added products. The company also hosted a 3-month EBNet placement for Dr Charlotte Lee –  see her report and video.

Meanwhile the next edition of PhycoFriday is on 28 August 2026 at 10:30 UK.

The speaker is Mélanie Vanessa Martins Silva, a PhD student at the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal. Her talk will feature microalgae metabolites with anti-inflammatory activity, a known factor in the development and progression of non-communicable diseases.

As part of the ALGAE4IBD Horizon 2020 project, Mélanie uses a bio-guided approach to screen microalgae extracts in human macrophage-like cells and identify the most active fractions with promising anti-inflammatory properties. The main focus of the project is on potential applications in improving human health  –  but who knows what uses these may have in Environmental Biotechnology?
