The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Pre/Postdoctoral Fellowship for Foreign Researchers (Short Term) provides the opportunity for short-term visits by researchers based in the UK or Ireland who are nationals or permanent residents of the UK, EU member states, Switzerland, Norway, the US or Canada to conduct cooperative research with leading groups at Japanese Universities and Institutions.
Nationals of other countries are eligible to apply to JSPS London if they have been engaged in PhD or Post Doctoral research continuously for a period of at least three years at a university or research institution in the UK or Ireland. These candidates must also come from a country with diplomatic relations with Japan or be from Taiwan or Palestine.
The programme is designed to provide researchers with first-hand experience of the research and living environment in Japan, whilst expanding academic exchange between Japan and the UK or Ireland.
Researchers in fields including Computer, Engineering, Health, Biological, Life, Natural and Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences are eligible to apply.
Eligible applicants must either be within 2 years of receiving their PhD at the time of applying to start their fellowship, or have obtained their PhD at a university outside of Japan within the last 6 years (on or after 1 April 2021).
Awards will cover visits of 1 to 12 months. Fellowships must start between 1 June 2027 and 31 March 2028.
