CIWEM: A Fresh Water Future – update and conference 2 Dec 2025

Date and time:  2 Dec 2025, 09:30-18:30 UK

Venue:  30 Euston Square, London

The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) is running a conference on A Fresh Water Future (AFWF) as a continuation of its ongoing work on this important area.  CIWEM has also published an update to its 2024 Report, summarising further scritiny of the sector this year.

In the conference details it is noted: “Water has been high on the agenda again in 2025, with a record water company asset delivery programme. Bill increases. Pollution events. Fines. A new Special Measures Act. Further water legislation in development. Legal challenges. Water companies in financial distress. Drought. And a review of water governance by the Independent Water Commission.

These events and more point to the growing recognition of the scale and centrality of water challenges to government growth ambitions. After a year of analysis this conference will discuss the priorities for action and the biggest opportunities for unlocking real improvement across 2026 and beyond.

AFWF will build up a more granular picture of how we move from principles and concepts to mainstreamed delivery of a healthier and more resilient water environment that can sustain long-term UK prosperity. It will draw on events domestically as well as looking at overseas experience to create a shared understanding”.

The conference is expected to cover:

  • Priorities from the Independent Water Commission: The biggest and most urgent areas for action
  • Government response: Will new policy deliver the improvements needed? What are the targets?
  • Regulatory frameworks: What are the needs for new legislation and from the new super regulator?
  • Timescales and funding: How long and how much will it take to deliver
