While Governments struggle to respond to short-term price swings and more lasting uncertainties on global energy supplies, the renewable energy sector is pressing the case for diversification and reduced reliance on fossil fuel resources. The UK’s Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) has issued a special Newsletter for members, with an open update on its activities in response to the current Middle East crisis, including a letter to the Prime Minister and briefings for MPs. A group of organisations including ADBA, the Renewable Energy Association (REA) and the Green Gas Taskforce (GGT) have also written to the Secretary of State for Energy outlining the benefits of biomethane and asking the government to provide a credible pathway to unlock its full potential. Meanwhile biomethane’s role in energy security is being discussed everywhere from market analysts and energy blogs to the Financial Times letters column.
Dr Mark Walker, who leads EBNet’s Anaerobic Digestion WG, said “It’s good to see the sector using this opportunity to push forward, but the fact is it should not need a war or the threat of price shocks for the government to prioritise the need for sustainable energy supplies. There is an abundance of evidence and reports demonstrating the necessity for and benefits of an energy transition, and the contribution biomethane can make: what we need now is string and consistent policies to support this”.
