A summary of key findings from a workshop on the Role of Anaerobic Fermentation in the Circular Bioeconomy is now available on the Resources page. The workshop was organised by EBNet’s Anaerobic Fermentation WG and was jointly funded by EBNet and our sister-NIBB the Biomass Biorefinery Network (BBNet).
The Summary presents the outcome of discussions on three key application areas based on the sources of organic residues and wastes, including biosolids produced from wastewater treatment works, organic fraction of municipal solid wastes, and agro-industrial wastes and residues. A more detailed report will be available in 2026, and the outputs will be formalised as a position document on this important topic.
Dr Yue Zhang said, “The workshop not only helped to advance and consolidate our ideas on scale-up and economic viability of AF; but also provided a great opportunity to strengthen our links with industry and renew links with leading groups in Europe, where there have been major advances over the last few years. We are grateful to the participants and look forward to more collaboration in future”.
An Event Summary for the workshop is also available on the WG and Resources pages. See here for a WG webinar on Mixed Culture Anaerobic Fermentation in the EU which arose directly from the workshop; and here for a presentation on the theme of the joint workshop at the recent BBNet conference. The WG’s animation introducing some key concepts is available here.
