The Bio-Based and Biodegradable Industries Association (BBIA) is hosting three free online sessions introducing key concepts in Bio-based and Biodegradable Materials for the circular bioeconomy.
These sessions may be of interest to all EBNet members, especially ECRs and those interested in the activities of our Anaerobic Fermentation WG.
- Demystifying the Bioeconomy: Key Terms and Concepts Tue 28 Oct 2025 12-13:00 UK
This first session offers a clear practical entry point into the language of the bioeconomy. Participants will learn key terms and concepts that underpin discussions of biobased innovation, including differences between biobased, biodegradable, and compostable. Using real-world examples, the session explores how terminology is applied in research, policy, and commercial contexts, and why clear communication is essential. It will also highlight common sources of confusion and provides tips to avoid misinterpretation.
- From Biomass to Biorefinery: Creating a Truly Circular Economy Fri 31 Oct 2025 12 13:00 UK
This session introduces feedstocks and processes that form the backbone of the bioeconomy. Participants will learn about different types of biomass resources, how they are converted in biorefineries, and the range of technologies used to unlock value from renewable raw materials. Real-world case studies will illustrate how these processes enable more sustainable production systems, while also addressing technical and economic challenges.
- Bio-Based Breakthroughs: Emerging Markets and Materials Wed 5 Nov 2025 12-13:00 UK
This session explores how biobased chemicals and materials are moving from concept to commercial reality. Participants will gain insight into the most promising product categories, including bio-based plastics, chemicals, and specialty materials, with examples of products already on the market or close to launch. It will highlight both the opportunities and challenges in scaling these solutions, from market adoption to regulatory drivers.
All sessions conclude with time for Q&A and discussion, giving participants the opportunity to apply these concepts to their own work.
