The Biomass Biorefinery Network (BBNet) has launched its report on The State of UK Biorefining: Progress, Performance and Pathways for Growth.
The report assesses the evolution, current status and future prospects of the UK biorefining sector. It draws on a decade of published literature (2014–2024), stakeholder engagement conducted in 2025, and economic analysis to identify barriers, opportunities and strategic interventions required to unlock growth and global competitiveness of the UK’s biorefining sector
Dr Yue Zhang, co-Lead of EBNet’s Anaerobic Fermentation WG, said: “This new report from BBNet offers a clear and timely assessment of the UK biorefining landscape and certainly merits thoughtful and attentive reading. The emphasis on coordinated action across industry, funders and government resonates strongly with the future direction of the Anaerobic Fermentation WG, particularly around accelerating scale‑up. We look forward to reflecting in more depth on the report’s recommendations, and considering how they might inform our work in this area”.
The report was commissioned by BBNet and written by Alder BioInsights, in collaboration with Frey Consulting and Perspective Economics. The full document is available HERE.
This report is BBNet’s final output. The BBNet website will be accessible until the end of 2027, and all resources, reports and information will be available on it until then. We congratulate our sister-NIBB on its excellent work and have greatly enjoyed our mutual cooperation and collaboration.
