CO2 Biomethanation – joint CRNet/EBNet report

CO2 Biomethanation – joint CRNet/EBNet report

The full report on a study of gaps and opportunities for scale-up of CO2 biomethanisation is now available on EBNet’s Resources page, along with an Executive Summary.  The report is the main output from a study jointly funded by EBNet and our sister-NIBB, the Carbon Recycling Network, with the lion’s share of the funding contributed by CRNet. The work was carried out by members of EBNet’s AD WG led by Dr Mark Walker of the University of Hull.

Modeling the decarbonisation of carbon-intensive industries through the integration of CO2 biomethanation: assessment of carbon savings and production costs – Main report and Executive Summary

The report is supported by a detailed presentation HERE on YouTube, and a poster-format summary on CO2 Biomethanation as an enabling process for carbon recycling and utilisation – critical review of gaps and opportunities for future scale-up in the UK

Prof Charles Banks said, “This report provides an interesting insight into biomethane production from a carbon and economic perspective: but economics do change and are not a real measure of sustainability. The crux of the matter is the longer we continue to subsidise fossil fuels the less chance we have of saving the planet. We need carbon emissions savings whilst at the same time achieving an excellent way to store energy in an efficient manner with existing infrastructure. A worthwhile read, and I hope there will be many suggestions to Mark on where this research should lead next”. Prof Banks was Director of the Anaerobic Digestion Network, EBNet’s parent Phase 1 NIBB, and is a member of the Carbon Recycling Network’s Management Board.
