In March 2024, EBNet supported Prof Tom Curtis and Angela Bywater to attend a meeting on anaerobic digestion (AD) in remote and off-grid applications, hosted by the US National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) and funded by NATO Science for Peace and Security (NATO SPS): see here for more details of their visit.
During the trip, the meeting participants took part in a workshop to refine the design of a simple AD system for small-scale sewage treatment in cold regions. This session, along with subsequent meetings and discussions, provided the basis for a successful funding application. A team led by Prof Jane Fowler of Simon Fraser University in Canada and Prof Liliana Castro Molano of the Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia was awarded a NATO SPS Multi-Year Project on Renewable Energy and Sanitation in Remote Off-grid Applications. The grant, which has a 3-year duration and a value of 400 k€, started on 22 Sept 2025 and focuses on sustainable sanitation solutions for remote Arctic and sub-Arctic environments. The work aims to support both sanitation and energy security in rural and remote areas through the development of low-energy AD systems suitable for off-grid use. Tom and Angie remain involved as advisors to the project.
For more details of the project and its objectives see HERE. We look forward to updating EBNet members on progress with the work.
