The UK Parliamentās Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Committee has issued a Call for Evidence on issues related to the Global Plastics Treaty.
The final round of negotiations on a new Global Plastics Treaty (Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee or INC-5) was planned for completion in November 2024. Unfortunately the talks ended without an agreement and another round (INC-5.2) is scheduled to take place between 5-14 August 2025 in Switzerland.
In July the EFRA Committee will hold an evidence sessionĀ to explore key proposed elements of the Treaty, UK leadership on the issues, and barriers to be overcome to reach agreement in August.
Before this evidence session, the Committee is inviting Written Evidence submissions on any or all of the following points:
- What were the main reasons for the INC-5 talks in November 2024 failing to reach agreement on a Global Plastics Treaty?
- What are the main areas of agreement and divergence between parties?
- How might remaining areas of disagreement be overcome at INC-5.2 in August 2025?
- What would represent a successful outcome, and what are the prospects for this?
- What can the UK Government do to demonstrate leadership and drive ambition with regards to the proposed Treaty?
EBNet does not have a Working Group on plastics pollution, but has long-term interests both in plastics biodegradation and in manufacture of renewable bio-plastics, as part of its Theme 1 on Pollutants and Media.Ā For more information see here, and for our webinar on plastic pollution led by Dr Alice Horton of the UK Microplastics Network see HERE.
The UKRI-funded P3EB Hub focuses specifically on plastics biotechnology.
