Fundamentals of Metrology 2025 – Biofilms Alliance training course

Date: 18 Nov or 8 Dec 2025, online

The Biofilm Alliance is funding a free training course on Fundamentals of Metrology. The course is intended for those involved in biofilm analysis and control who want a deeper understanding of how to ensure the quality, reliability, and comparability of measurement data. It is particularly relevant to researchers, laboratory professionals and regulatory specialists involved in the development, validation or standardisation of biofilm test methods, and to industry practitioners responsible for quality assurance and process monitoring. Early-career scientists and doctoral researchers seeking to strengthen their knowledge of measurement science and its application to biological systems will also find it valuable.

Topics:

  • What is metrology and its applicability in biofilm-related measurements?
  • Quantities, units and standards
  • Fundamentals of metrological traceability and evaluating measurement uncertainty
  • Introduction to laboratory quality assurance
  • Ensuring reliable data–method validation in biofilm analysis
  • Introduction to international metrology
  • The importance of standardisation & standards in biofilm solutions

The course is delivered by the National Measurement Laboratory (NML) and the National Physical Laboratory  (NPL). It consists of two 2.5-hour modules, starting at 09:30 and 13:30 UK.
