NERC Call – AI for the environment

NERC Call – AI for the environment

Closing date: 11 Dec 2025

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is calling for proposals to phase one of its programme on Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Science.

NERC is seeking bold, ambitious projects that accelerate the development of leading-edge data science tools and AI to help deliver transformative solutions to intractable environmental challenges. Applications from consortia able to traverse disciplinary boundaries are strongly welcomed.

Phase 1 will support relatively small pump-priming activities, with high levels of innovation, adventure, and risk. Phase 2 will be a closed funding opportunity and only projects funded in Phase 1 will be invited to apply.

Projects must start on 1 July 2026 and last for 18 months. The full economic cost (FEC) of a project can be between £200k – 400k funded at 80% FEC. This is the first part of a two-phased programme.
