NERC Early Independence Research Fellowship 2026

NERC Early Independence Research Fellowship 2026

Closing date: 16 June 2026

These  Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Fellowships are intended to support excellent investigator-led research. Multidisciplinary applications that cross into other Research Council areas are welcome, but the primary focus of the work must fall within NERC’s remit.

Applicants must:

  • be based at a UK research organisation eligible for Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funding
  • hold a PhD or have relevant research experience combined with clear evidence of leadership potential
  • be an early career researcher and meet the individual eligibility requirements

To be awarded a fellowship, applicants must demonstrate that they be working independently of senior colleagues with whom they have previously collaborated, or are currently working with in a supporting role. Assessors must be convinced that applicants have devised their own research questions.

The Fellowship lasts for five years. There is no limit on the value of the grant. NERC will fund 80% of the full economic cost (FEC).
