PhD Opportunity: Continuous-flow Dark Fermentation of Wheat Straw by Anaerobic Fungi to Produce Hydrogen Gas and Organic Acids

PhD Opportunity: Continuous-flow Dark Fermentation of Wheat Straw by Anaerobic Fungi to Produce Hydrogen Gas and Organic Acids

Deadline: 3 February 2025. This is a competition funded PhD Project (UK Students Only). Based at the Department of Biology, University of York. Supervisors: Dr. Matthew Reilly (Biology), Prof. James Chong (Biology) and Prof. Alison Parkin (Chemistry).

Based in the internationally recognised Centre of Excellence for Anaerobic Digestion (CEAD) the candidate will gain specialist knowledge relating to fermenter design and training required for growing AF. This training will include a range of anaerobic microbiological techniques which are essential for working with defined cultures of anaerobic microorganisms. You will develop their expertise in a wide range of biochemical analyses and gain an understanding of the technical challenges faced by industrial scale fermentation and lignocellulose conversion. This interdisciplinary project is ideal for candidates from various disciplines who are passionate about biotechnology and interested in developing bioengineering solutions to tackle global-scale industrial challenges related to clean product production.
