Workshop: Environmental Biotechnology for PFAS management

Workshop: Environmental Biotechnology for PFAS management

Date: 6 June 2025

Venue: Cranfield University

The PFAS WG, led by Dr Tao Lyu, is organising a workshop on ‘Environmental Biotechnology for the management of PFAS and beyond‘.  Keynote speakers Prof Peter JaffĂ©, and Prof Joshua Atkinson from Princeton University, USA will give talks on natural bacterial strains for PFAS defluorination and synthetic biology approaches in environmental applications.

Prof Tony Gutierrez, of EBIC and EBNet, said “PFAS, or the so-called ‘forever chemicals’, have been found in just about every corner of our planet, and whilst they pose health threats to humans and other life, we still know very little on their long-term impacts. It’s well known that microbes play a pivotal role in combatting much of our pollution problems, but as yet no microbial species has been discovered that can chomp on PFAS. This is where Environmental Biotechnology could help, by tweaking the genetic code of certain microbes to take their first bite of PFAS and, hopefully, enjoy a meal…”

ECRs are warmly invited to apply for a 5-minute presentation slot, with a deadline for applications of 25 May 2025.  Prizes will be awarded for the two best presentations.

The workshop is jointly sponsored by EBNet and EBIC. Attendance is free, and a limited amount of support is available for ECR travel:  contact info@ebicentre.co.uk.
