The Circular Bio-Based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) is inviting proposals to develop innovative and sustainable bio-based solutions with a variety of funding types and across a range of topics. Examples particularly relevant to EBNet members include:
Innovation actions – flagship
- Boosting biorefinery competitiveness through biotech – €20 million
- Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) bio-based alternatives for fertilising and/or crop protection products – €20 million
Innovation actions
- Biotech routes for valorisation of residual biomass – €14 million
- Bio-based additives as alternatives to unlock and increase recyclability and/or biodegradability – €14 million
Research and innovation actions
- Addressing separation and purification challenges in biorefineries – €6.5 million
- SSbD bio-based polymers from alternative sources – €6.5 million
Coordination and support actions
- Supporting industry in the switch to sustainable and circular bio-based products and processes – €1.2 million

Meanwhile don’t miss the CBE JU’s latest annual activity report. There was record interest in the programme in 2025, with 240 eligible proposals requesting >1.4 € billion. SMEs made up 38% of all programme participants. Several CBE JU-funded projects reached important milestones, including the opening of the first industrial microalgae biorefinery by the SCALE project in Southern France.
