Outputs from the EMISI project have now been published and are available on the EMISI website of the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), where you can find information on the project, the teams involved and the full results. These include a Policy Brief, a Findings and Recommendations report, a Technical Note on methods for measuring sanitation emissions and developing city and national estimates, and an instructional video. The emissions datasets are also available, and represent an invaluable resource for researchers and practitioners in this field.
The Policy Brief summarises project findings, identifies knowledge gaps, and provides 6 key recommendations:
- Integrate GHG mitigation measures into the implementation of government policy targets
- Prioritise on-site systems as the primary focus for emissions management in the sanitation sector
- Prioritise continued inter-ministerial coordination on sanitation GHG emissions inventory and mitigation
- Build on the current water reform agenda to strengthen sanitation governance, as a foundation for emissions management and access to climate financing
- Invest in research to address critical remaining knowledge gaps that limit the sanitation sector’s ability to prioritise mitigation options and access climate financing
- Initiate pilot sanitation mitigation projects
The EMISI project is an initiative of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing in Indonesia, supported through the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Indonesia-Australia Partnership for Infrastructure. The project was led by UTS in partnership with Universitas Indonesia (UI), the Centre for Regulation, Policy and Governance (CRPG), the University of Leeds, and the University of New South Wales (UNSW). EBNet is proud to have made a minor contribution and input to the work carried out in this project, via our N2O WG (see here).
