Joint call to promote nutrients in the EU Circular Economy Act

Joint call to promote nutrients in the EU Circular Economy Act

The European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP) is inviting organisations to sign a letter calling for ambitious targets for nutrients in the EU’s Circular Economy Act.

Sustainable nutrient supply and management is a critical issue for many regions, with several countries including the UK currently reviewing associated regulations: any further developments are thus likely to have an impact across states and jurisdictions worldwide.Ā  Nutrient recovery and re-use is also of interest to several EBNet Working groups, including Aerobic Granulation Processes, Anaerobic Digestion, Anaerobic Fermentation, Biochars, Bioelectrochemical Systems, N2O Emissions, Process Integration & Sustainability Assessment and Water Biofilms – and yes, probably also Environmental Sensors and AI/ML.Ā  All this just confirms how deeply interwoven the topic is with other environmental protection and sustainability issues.

Current signatories to the call range from major companies in the water and wastewater industry to University groups working in the topic.

EBNet supports the need for clearer, stronger nutrient incentives for nutrient management and recovery. As a UK-focused Network with a limited lifetime, we will not sign the call but are keen to draw attention to its proposals.Ā  For all those interested in developments in this area, or likely to be directly affected by changes, further information is available on ESPP’s Regulatory Activities pageĀ  –Ā  along with details of a wide range of other initiatives.
