GBEP Workshop – Bioenergy by-products: bioeconomy solutions for climate action and resilient agri-food systems

GBEP Workshop – Bioenergy by-products: bioeconomy solutions for climate action and resilient agri-food systems

Date: 3 Nov 2026, online

This full-day workshop on Bioenergy by-products: bioeconomy solutions for climate action and resilient agrifood systems will explore the opportunities through two complementary sessions. The morning session, Bioenergy by-products as an alternative to mineral fertiliser, will examine the role of digestate, biochar and other bio-based products in nutrient recovery, soil fertility and circular agriculture, including lessons from European efforts to promote recycled nutrient sources and sustainable fertilizer alternatives.

The afternoon session, Bioenergy by-products for carbon farming, will focus on the contribution of biochar and other bioenergy-derived products to climate mitigation and carbon farming initiatives. Discussions will cover practical experience, policy developments, monitoring and certification approaches, and opportunities for farmer participation in carbon markets.

Bringing together policymakers, researchers and practitioners, the workshop aims to promote knowledge exchange on how bioenergy by-products can support resilient agrifood systems, advance circular economy objectives and contribute to climate action.

This workshop is likely to interest a wide range of EBNet members, especially from the AD, AF, Biochar and PISA WGs.  Let us know if you plan to attend the workshop and wish to provide feedback.

The event is organised by the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP), and international initiative hosted by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
