A piece in the latest issue of CIWEM’s The Environment magazine describes Scottish Water’s newly-upgraded Winchburg wastewater treatment works (WWTW). The upgrade was required both because the existing facility was reaching the end of its operational life, and as the local area is projected to experience significant growth over the next two decades, resulting in an expected four-fold increase in the population to be served.

According to the company’s Communications & Engagement consultant Alex Johnston, “Scottish Water’s aspiration for Winchburgh was to deliver Scotland’s lowest carbon wastewater treatment works, providing significant environmental benefits and setting a blueprint for future investment in line with the publicly-owned utility’s drive towards becoming net zero by 2040”. 

Key to this was the selection of an aerobic granular sludge process for the biological treatment stage, accompanied by other choices designed to reduce carbon footprint during construction and operation.

Scottish Water now plans to replicate the approach used and the system adopted across future projects.

Dr Yongqiang Liu, who leads EBNet’s Aerobic Granulation Processes WG and works on advanced wastewater treatment systems in the EBIC Hub, said “It is very pleasing to see aerobic granular sludge, which is gaining traction in the UK, adopted here as the foundation of a plant designed from the outset to minimise carbon. Combining the process’s inherent energy and footprint advantages with low-carbon construction choices makes Winchburgh a valuable example for the sector. It is encouraging that a publicly-owned utility is leading the way”.
