Closing dates: JSPS 3 Sept 2026, Royal Society 24 Sept 2026

Applications are invited for bilateral UK/Japan research projects in the Natural Sciences, with each team applying to and funded by the agency in its own country.

Project duration is 2 years. Projects must start by 1 April 2027.

UK funding of up to £12k is primarily for travel to stimulate new collaborations, gather preliminary data, develop research ideas and strengthen further funding applications. For funding conditions for partners in Japan, see the JSPS call webpage.

Up to 10 projects will to be supported.

For more information on how to apply to the Royal Society, see HERE.

Please note there is also a JSPS Open Partnership Scheme for joint projects or seminars, with similar coverage and no limit on the eligible research area. The Japan-based group can receive support from JSPS and the counterpart group in another country should seek support for their involvement from a funding body recognised by JSPS.
