N2O emissions at WWTP: new protocol available

N2O emissions at WWTP: new protocol available

A great opportunity to access an invaluable new contribution on evaluating N2O emissions from wastewater treatment plants, which the International Water Association (IWA) has made available in open access eBook format.

N2O is the main contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at many wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), but there is no standard approach to measurement. This publication presents the first globally-coordinated protocol for monitoring and quantifying N2O in real time at full-scale WWTP.

Dr Domingo-Felez, one of the four Editors of the book, said: “Beyond its scientific foundation, the protocol’s main strength is its practical applicability. It offers a common step-by-step approach to measuring N₂O emissions that will help in comparing mitigation strategies. The protocol provides examples for different plant configurations (open, covered, and surface-aerated) and its 19 real-world case studies allow each facility to tailor monitoring to its own circumstances”.

The protocol presents current best practice, and provides a framework that will be refined as new knowledge and experience become available. For more information and to access the book, see HERE.

This topic is central to EBNet’s N2O WG. For other major contributions see the outputs from the EMISI project, and watch the WG News tag.
