EnviroPiNet – a framework for biofilter performance prediction

There has recently been a strong and very welcome resurgence of interest in biofilters as a powerful and sustainable water treatment technology. Examples include outputs from EBNet’s Water Biofilms WG, and funding awards for the SandSCAPE project and for the EPSRC Network+ Better Water 4 All, as well as ongoing …

AF workshop – key findings

A summary of key findings from a workshop on the Role of Anaerobic Fermentation in the Circular Bioeconomy is now available on the Resources page. The workshop was organised by EBNet’s Anaerobic Fermentation WG and was jointly funded by EBNet and our sister-NIBB the Biomass Biorefinery Network (BBNet). The Summary …

Biochar WG at AMIGO-Biochar Symposium

Strong representation from the EBNet Biochar WG at last week’s Biochar Symposium at Teeside University, hosted by Dr Tannaz Pak. There were talks by Prof Frederic Coulon on Reviving bioremediation options and sustainability: Microbial enhanced biochar opportunities;  Prof Tony Gutierrez on Biochar for the microbial-enhanced remediation of contaminated soil; and …

Next BES webinar coming soon – and latest video now available!

The next webinar in the current series is a joint event with PhycoClub, with Presenter Dr Marin Sawa of Newcastle University and ECR Chair Dr Gabriele Frascaroli.  The webinar will take place on Fri 12 Dec 2025 at 10:30-11:30 UK:  for more details scan the QR code below, or see …

Microbial ecology in drinking water biofilms – a taster with more to come

Continuing a theme from a recent post on Microbial ecology and drinking water biofiltration, two papers below are well worth a look. They are on linked topics and are published in conference proceedings, with full papers on the way: so a thought-provoking taster for what is to come. Prof Cindy …

Microbial ecology and drinking water biofiltration

A recent study in Water Research examining microbiomes in water filtration is central to the theme of our Water Biofilms WG, and to EBNet’s ongoing interest in complex microbial ecosystems that prevent or remediate pollution and protect public health. Prof Cindy Smith, a key figure in the University of Glasgow …

Anaerobic Fermentation at the BBNet Conference – talk now available

Dr Yue Zhang’s invited talk on The Anaerobic Fermentation Working Group, and the role of Anaerobic Fermentation in the circular bio-economy is now available here on EBNet’s Youtube channel. The talk was given at the 4th BBNet conference The Future Prospects for Biorefining: Feedstocks, Technologies & Products held on 15-17 Oct …

Frozen fun – with interesting lipids

A recent paper looks at the revival rates for microorganisms found in ancient permafrost cores from the Permafrost Research Tunnel near Fairbanks, Alaska. The researchers compared microbial growth rates, marker gene sequences and greenhouse gas (CO2, CH4) emissions across cores held anaerobically at ambient (−4°C) and elevated (4°C, 12°C) temperatures. …

New BES Webinar available – and don’t forget the next one!

The most recent webinar in our current BES series, from 8 Sept 2025, is now available HERE on EBNet’s YouTube channel. The topic was Interfacial Bioelectrochemistry  –  Enzymatic NO and CO₂ Reduction and H₂ Evolution. Our speaker was Dr Cristina M Cordas, from the NOVA School of Science and Technology …

Wastewater treatment – past and future perspectives

A recent perspective paper on wastewater treatment will please many readers while ruffling a few feathers for some others. The paper notes that over the last century wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) have essentially evolved in a piecemeal way to address a number of issues, rather than adopting holistic design approaches …

Tannery wastes – AD or AF?

A recent review paper looks at the application of anaerobic digestion (AD) for treatment of tannery wastes – including waste generated in leather production, and sludges from the treatment of tannery effluents. Leather production has historically been a notoriously polluting process, and despite technology improvements it continues to produce a …

August BES Webinar now available – and September one on the way

The latest webinar in our new BES series, from 4 Aug 2025, is now available here on the EBNet Youtube channel. The topic was Microbial electrolysis cells for H2 production and CO2 microbial electrosynthesis. The speakers were Dr Sovik Das, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the …
